Organization and Structure The Novato Charter School is unique not
only in terms of its approach to educating children, but also in terms of its
organizational structure and its relationship with the Novato Unified School
District (NUSD). This brief section is intended to provide you with some
information about the structure and how the NCS operates within this
framework. The state law, SB 1448, which allows for the
establishment of charter schools, lays out some structure as to how charter schools
must interact with their school district.
The NCS has an elected Board of Directors
that is responsible for making the majority of the decisions about the
operation of the school. The NCS Board is governed by a set of by-laws that
describe how the board will operate procedurally. The Board meets a minimum
of once per month and all meetings are open to the public. Committees are
established to oversee and implement the various projects and tasks that
arise, and new committee members are always welcome. A listing of Board
members is available upon request.
While the NCS is legally a part of the NUSD
and entitled to many of the benefits that all other public schools receive,
charter schools do not have to adhere to many of the regulations of other
public schools. For example, decisions about issues such as curriculum,
school year and teachers’ salaries are made by the NCS Board of Directors and
are reported to the NUSD Board.
